With Mahesh Babu making his Tamil debut with the star director A R Murugadoss, the hype for “Spyder” was real! The movie entertains almost the entire runtime of 2 hours 26 mins but has its dull moments in terms of love sequences and few untimely songs.
The crux of the movie is “humanity” and what happens when people develop a “sadist” nature towards other fellow beings forms the other half. SJ Surya as the sadist shines big time. His body language and dialogue delivery elevate scenes to a different level. You don’t get to see movies with the baddie having equal weight as the hero. But just like any other ARM movie, the balance here is what engages the audience until the end.
Rakul Preeth as the hero’s love girl plays her part well but I felt the film would have fared even well with the love portion entirely chopped off. That goes with the songs as well. “Ciciliya” with its beautiful picturesque setting is a Visual treat and Harris trademark beats works out well. The BGM is good but could have been better.
The supporting roles played by RJ Balaji and the others work well. Bharath as the baddie’s bro isn’t worth a mention but is kinda ok. The Brilliance of Santhosh Sivan’s camera work is seen in each and every frame. AR Murugadoss is always known for taking a current social issue in hand and making a gem of a movie around it. This movie’s story falls on the same line but the screenplay falls short of “Thuppaki” and “Kaththi” in terms of engagement factor. With Thuppaki and Kaththi, there was always a serious cloud of thrill surrounding each and every scene, and the entire movie flew in a similar themed note. But here, with comedy sprinkled in certain serious scenes (Ex: the Vijay tv one), the genre of the movie is put to question.
Mahesh Babu leaves no stones unturned. Be it action, dance, emotion, love, he displays utmost brilliance in each and every opportunity provided. He himself doing the Tamil Dubbing is a huge bonus. But there’s one thing which I have to accept – SJ Surya’s spellbound performance just overshadows the Prince’s brilliant performance.
A decent entertainer with a good social message but could have been better in a lot of ways!
